As several departments planned to move into an expanded facility in a nearby community, plans were put into space to re-organize, consolidate and renovate the clinic spaces those departments were vacating. The three-story, 56,000 sqft health center, originally constructed as a residential structure, had previously been expanded multiple times over the years. The expansions resulted in a building containing a variety of construction types which created circulation issues resulting from misaligned floors where the expansions occurred. Those conditions, along with the client’s desire to retain the center’s existing floor-plan as a cost savings measure, created a unique set of challenges for our planning team. The team reviewed the existing department layouts and set goals with key user groups and then generated a reorganization plan. After approval, the team began the scheduling / staging and sequencing planning effort. The team’s thoughtful methodology and focus on patient safety, cost effective outcomes and efficient staging and sequencing have allowed the clinic to remain fully operational while the various phases of construction activities are being completed on time and within budget. Advocate Aurora Health’s internal design personnel were engaged to provide interior design finishes, furniture, equipment, IT and security system design and documentation. Construction activities for the project began in mid-2018 and the fully remodeled facility was completed in December of 2019.
