What sparked your interest in the construction industry?

I have always had a big interest in residential home design and construction, but I am not sure why because it doesn’t run in the family. When I was in 5th grade, my art fair projects were hand drawn floor plans and elevations of a huge house. As I got into high school, my construction classes got me more interested in the building side rather than the design side of construction.

What was your first job?

My first job was at the old Shopko retail store in receiving. I usually was the person in the truck unloading because I was the 16-year-old. Back then, they had a “code red” intercom code that meant a shop lifter left the store and was running and we were allowed to help chase them. I sprinted through the parking lot and across the busiest string in Manitowoc and caught the guy. The next day they gave me 2 free candy bars for helping and changed the policy to restrict that from happening again.

Do you have a motto or personal mantra?

“Live as if you’ll die tomorrow, learn as if you’ll live forever”- Ghandi. I know, it’s a common one but my brother-in-law, who passed away in 2005, lived by this statement so I got it tattooed on me as part of my memorial to him. It is a constant reminder to seize every opportunity put in front of you and that it’s never too late to learn something new.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

At this point in my life, I would say I’d love to be able to be in multiple places at one time. With both of my kids in activities, it’s hard to have to miss some lessons or games because you are with the other kid.

What was the best vacation you have ever had?

Right after covid restrictions were lifted and after a few delays because of it, my wife and I spent 2 weeks island hopping and hiking in Hawaii without kids. My hands down favorite hike on a vacation though was this past year when we hiked the Narrows at Zion National Park, which is a 10-mile hike in a river with 600’ canyon walls on each side of you.

What is your favorite past-time or hobby?

I feel like my only extracurricular activity these days is being a taxi driver for my kids. When I am not doing that though, I enjoy smoking meat, turkey hunting, and ice fishing.
