To help meet growing healthcare needs in Sheboygan County, we built the Aurora Medical Center Inpatient Expansion for Advocate Aurora Health in Sheboygan, WI. The $5.5 million project converted 12 Behavioral Health patient rooms into Medical-Surgical (MedSurg) accommodations, giving the hospital greater flexibility to serve patients and adapt its existing space as care needs change.
The renovation extends beyond the patient rooms. It updated the nurse station, staff locker room, and break room to better support MedSurg operations, while existing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems were modified for the new use. Exterior glass at patient rooms and along the courtyard were also replaced as part of the modernization.
Because construction was taking place within an active hospital, careful planning and coordination were essential. Rather than completely gutting the unit as a part of the demolition, the team strategically worked within the existing space, retaining much of the current layout while removing ceilings, flooring, and select partitions where needed. Early MEP investigations, dust-control measures, and protection of existing HVAC systems helped minimize disruption and maintain a safe environment for patients and staff throughout construction. We also self-performed the interior demolition and finished casework, giving our team greater control over critical portions of the work and allowing us to closely coordinate construction as conditions are uncovered.
Scheduled for completion in November 2026, the project builds on JP Cullen’s extensive healthcare experience and long-standing relationship with Advocate Aurora Health. It’s another example of how our teams approach complex renovations in active healthcare environments: understanding existing conditions, planning around ongoing operations, and executing the work with patient and staff needs top of mind.
