We believe exceptional customer service is the cornerstone of success. Our commitment to going above and beyond for clients has not only resulted in successfully completed construction projects but has also turned many into raving fans and loyal, repeat customers. In this blog series, we will share inspiring case studies that highlight our dedication to exceeding expectations. These stories highlight our dedicated project teams’ proactive approach, attention to detail, and unwavering commitment to excellence, all of which have significantly enhanced our clients’ satisfaction and project outcomes. In this post, we dive into our collaboration with one of our repeat clients, Direct Supply, and how we turned their vision into reality by transforming a treasured historic building into an Innovation & Technology Center.
Located in the heart of the Milwaukee School of Engineering’s campus, Direct Supply’s Innovation & Technology Center is like a children’s museum for adults, blending work and play. This 55,000-square-foot building, originally the 1851 German-English Academy, needed a modern makeover. We transformed it into a cutting-edge space where employees can freely test, validate, and bring their ideas to life.
Direct Supply’s vision to create a dynamic, forward-thinking environment required more creativity than what is typically seen from a project team, and we were eager to jump at the chance to push the boundaries and incorporate innovative ideas of our own and customize designs that would bring the unique vision to life. Here are just a few of the extraordinary efforts our team undertook to ensure Direct Supply’s space was nothing short of spectacular.
Antique London Phone Booth
When Direct Supply requested a 1930s cast iron red London phone booth for their space, we were inquisitive but ready for the challenge of finding such a unique piece. Searching online, we were surprised to find one at an estate sale that weekend. We secured it and transported the 1,700 lb. booth through heavy Wisconsin snow. But, the real challenge was maneuvering it into place with less than an inch of vertical clearance, requiring precise effort. Now, the booth stands as a stunning, nostalgic centerpiece in the building, perfect for taking phone calls or enjoying a quiet moment.
Human-Size Mario Pipe
Innovation and whimsy went hand-in-hand when we created a human-size Mario Pipe to connect two floors. This unique feature was initially met with skepticism, even our experienced drywall experts doubted the feasibility. However, our team’s determination and ingenuity turned this imaginative concept into a functional reality, delighting everyone who uses it as an alternative to climbing the stairs.
Blinking Arrow
Bringing a touch of vintage charm, we procured and restored a giant blinking arrow from an old car dealership. Our Project Manager, Jeff Schwasinger, saw this piece at auction and took a trip over the weekend to pick it up with his truck as shown above “what I sight I must have been driving down the road” he recalled. Upon completion of the restoration we safely hoisted this piece up on the wall of the two-story gymnasium. This required an elaborate pulley system and meticulous planning to accomplish. The result is a striking visual feature that captures the spirit of Direct Supply’s vision.
Antique Baby Grand Piano
Our team’s dedication to creating a memorable atmosphere also extended to the musical realm. We secured an antique baby grand piano from a garage sale for the Great Hall and transported it in style. Even testing it from the bed of a flatbed truck en route to the front door, we turned heads and brought a unique, joyous energy to the project.
Secret Passage Speakeasy
There was also a request for a secret passage leading to a hidden speakeasy. This was also met with excitement and creativity. We took to Facebook Marketplace and picked out an old vending machine to function as the door. Our talented team got to work retrofitting it for the space and surprised Direct Supply with their new secret passageway into the room only a few knew about. We not only built the passage but contributed to the design of the hidden space, ensuring it was both functional and intriguing.
Restored Bank Safe
One of the most impressive feats was the transportation and restoration of a 900 lb. bank safe. With remarkable strength and determination, our team managed to incorporate this piece into one of the rooms. This not only added a historical touch but also demonstrated our commitment to preserving and showcasing unique elements within the space of the speakeasy and now houses secret liquor bottles.
Each of these extraordinary efforts reflects our dedication to going above and beyond for our clients. By combining creativity, innovation, and sheer hard work, we turned Direct Supply’s vision into a remarkable reality. But don’t just take our word for it—hear it directly from our satisfied client:
“JP Cullen was sincerely interested in our vision for the space, our mission in serving some of the most vulnerable people in the country, and how they could use their skills to elevate what we were building beyond what we had even hoped for. They did all of this with a smile on their faces, a smile that kept all the way through this long project.”
