Meet Our Extern | Nolan Otremba

Laura Cullen

This summer we had the pleasure of taking part in Blackhawk Technical College’s Rock Externship Program. Nolan Otremba, a tech ed teacher from Beloit Turner High School, spent a week touring our project, offices, and learning from our industry experts. Hear from Laura Cullen, our Training Development Manager, on Nolan’s experiences during his interactive week at JP Cullen.

The Rock Externship Program is a program designed to immerse teachers in their specific industry to help them enrich their classroom. They spend a week partnering with a local business and end the experience with a workshop where they all share what they learned in the field. The program’s goal is to help teachers make curriculum that closely resembles what students will encounter in the real world. We were thrilled to play a crucial role in this.

Having Nolan Join us for the week was exciting. Throughout the busy week he toured Clinton Schools, Janesville Schools, Rock County Jail, and Cedar Crest. When Nolan was not at a jobsite, he interacted with different roles of the company. He got involved in design, estimating, safety, pre-construction, 3D modeling, and more. He even spent time with our foreman and superintendents reviewing operations plan to see how much preparation goes into our self-preformed work.

One element of our company that we were incredibly excited to share with Nolan was our passion for construction and our pride in our people. We strive to take care of our people and believe happy people result in happy clients. That’s why our mission is to identify, hire, train, and retain the best people to serve our customers.

It was fulfilling to put together a diverse schedule for Nolan so he could experience everything it took to get a project from blueprint to reality. Giving a teacher the chance to experience the construction industry firsthand is something special. This experience gave Nolan the basis to develop an accurate curriculum and have honest advice for his students. Preparing students for the real world will set them up for success, and we are proud to be part of it.
