Meet Adam Mastalir, one of our skilled Estimators who joined JP Cullen in May 2018 and has since become an integral part of our team. Currently serving as the lead estimator on the UW Health C2 Bed Tower Expansion project, they bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the Healthcare, Science, and Technology Division.
Description of current role at JP Cullen:
My role as a Preconstruction Manager within the Preconstruction Group is to win projects that algin with our corporate and division goals while also meeting the goals of our clients. It takes a team to win that work so my role also requires me to engage with our project teams to ensure we have alignment between how I am building the project in my head and how they will likely build it in the field.
What do you like best about working at JP Cullen?
It’s the people and the strong commitment we have to the success of one another. It is also our tendency to support and challenge one another with a long-term perspective that I appreciate. The generosity and support of the Cullen family is also something that sets JP Cullen apart.
If you had to choose a different profession, what would it be?
If late night talk show host wasn’t on the table, I would say a lawyer practicing patent law would have to be at the top of my list. I’ve always enjoyed the technical side of things and having the opportunity to help someone with their creative work I think would be extremely rewarding.
What is your favorite memory?
Spending time with my daughter and learning from her while I share with her my experiences will always be my favorite memories. Having worked alongside my grandfather in his woodshop and listening to the stories he shared, I realized early that it wasn’t what we were building that mattered, but the conversations and shared experiences we were having together. Thankfully today alongside my wife, I am able to continue this experience with our daughter.
If you could witness any event past, present or future, what would it be?
I tend to always think of scientific advancements as cool events to witness. There are so many, but the ones that really stick out to me are the ones centered around people coming together to do difficult things. If I were to look to the past, it would have to be the moon landing. I can watch it on video, but when you know what is going to happen it’s not the same. Looking to the future, I am still drawn to JFK’s speech and thinking about the things we do, not because it is easy but because it is hard. Soon we are going to complete some challenging projects as a team and every year I can check that box in a way, but I would hope to still be alive to witness a human landing on another surface like Mars.
What was your first job?
Well that seems like it might lead to my identity being stolen, so I can instead tell you about one of my worst jobs which was hand raking seaweed. The only way I can describe it is to imagine you are bailing hay, but instead it’s wet and you spend an entire day drudging around in it. Oddly enough it didn’t ruin my appetite for water as I still ended up working in water science at a later point in time.
What is something people wouldn’t expect about you?
I’m not sure what people would or would not expect about me, so if I were to tell my story to someone I just met, I would say that I am addicted to learning. I am fascinated with how things work and if I can’t figure it out, I ask questions and try to seek out people who want to explain things and share their knowledge.
What is your favorite past-time or hobby?
I’ve found gardening to be one of those rewarding hobbies because it is a project I can share with my wife and daughter. I also enjoy how gardening provides you with the opportunity to connect with nature and extend your living space outside of the house.
