Meet one of our Process Improvement Engineers Maurie Mueller!
Maurie has been at JP Cullen for five years. We sat down with him to learn more about him as well as hear some funny stories!
What caused you to get into your profession?
My dad, Jim Mueller, has had a great influence on my career choice. A self-employed drywall contractor in Janesville who’s been in business for himself for 50 years! Growing up I had the opportunity to work for him through high school, college, and continue to do so on weekends as needed. During this time I enjoyed the fact that once a project was finished we were off to the next one. It was a constant change of scenery which is what I was looking for myself. Whether he views himself as a mentor or not, I’ve seen the relationships he’s built and the people he’s influenced by the communities he’s worked. Something I hope to emulate as I progress through my own career.
What is your proudest achievement?
I am so very proud to work here at JP Cullen with the tremendous individuals who make up this company. The work I do with Process Improvement, having the ability to impact our self-performed operations and subcontractors is very rewarding in itself. My role as the current/outgoing Young Leaders President has been a great experience to see the group grow and continue to evolve, the mentorship I’ve been able to provide new members, and where I’m leaving the group as it continues to move forward under new leadership.
On a more personal note, my wife, Kelly, and I are very proud to have become parents February 14th, 2015 to our son, James, a.k.a “Red Rooster” a.ka. “Jimmer.” We now have a new addition to our family as well. Our son Joseph Maurice Mueller was born on February 18th this year. James is happy to be a big brother, but he isn’t quite sure what to think of him yet.
Following the Polar Plunge, our newborn son was born at UnityPoint-Meriter in the new Women & Infants Center which JP Cullen recently completed renovating. It was awesome to actually use the new center after seeing the space prior to construction and seeing the whole process of the job from start to finish, to becoming a user of the space.
If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be?
Too easy… Time Travel! Have you seen Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure? Think of the historic events you could witness, the tragedies you could prevent, the people you could meet, or lottery numbers you could use.
What is the funniest moment in your career?
Okay, it was my first job out of school. I was a project engineer for a Higher Education project in Chicago. During a contractor’s coordination meeting our General Superintendent asked me for the paint color of a PT-5 designation. I told him it was “eggshell.” He asked again, so I answered again… this went on a few more times with each pass our voices being raised to point of yelling across the conference table with our subcontractors there to witness. Soon enough, the superintendent got up walked to the end of the table where I was sitting with the finish schedule in hand and pointed out that I was reading the sheen rather than the color. Needless to say, my nickname for the remainder of the job was “Eggshell.”
