Unlocking Innovation: Wisconsin’s EDA Tech Hub for Personalized Medicine at BioHealth Summit

Betsy Ennis

BioForward hosted their annual 2023 Wisconsin BioHealth Summit a few weeks ago. This organization is a pillar in our Wisconsin Community, dedicated to representing and advancing the state’s BioHealth industry and serves as a collaborative platform for businesses, researchers, and professionals in the life sciences and BioHealth fields. JP Cullen is honored to be a member.

BioForward Health Summit Overview: The BioHealth Summit serves as the linchpin event of the year that brings all members, visionaries, and industry leaders together to celebrate our achievements, while forging new connections to propel us into an exciting future. “Made in Wisconsin” was the name of the panel JP Cullen had the honor of introducing at this year’s BioForward Summit in Madison. This presentation was made for us, being a 5th generation family-owned Wisconsin born and raised company, we know a thing or two about the significance of Wisconsin roots.

Made in Wisconsin – Biopharma Manufacturing Panel:

Wisconsin’s biomanufacturing sector is experiencing a remarkable boom, with companies flourishing. Since 2018, the state’s biomanufacturing industry has surged by an impressive 29%. These companies provide APIs and biologics, contributing to the development and manufacturing of cutting-edge therapeutics. This impressive growth has positioned Wisconsin favorably to spearhead the next era of biopharmaceutical manufacturing and entice more businesses to invest in Wisconsin’s manufacturing landscapes and continue bringing innovation from our Dairyland roots.

Panel participants included the impressive lineup of:

  • Adam Kujath, VP & General Manager, Sterling Pharma Solutions
  • Lori Aschenbrenner, Director, Drug Development and Regulatory Strategy Early Phase Development Solutions, Labcorp
  • David Goeddel, Director of API R&D, MilliporeSigma Life Science Services
  • Justin Koepsel, Senior Director, Commercial Operations, Catalent Biologics, Drug Substance

Takeaways:

Adam, Lori, David, and Justin all took the time to educate participants on the growth their own companies have experienced in Wisconsin over the last decade.

Pharma Solutions has been working for over 50 years to deliver comprehensive small molecule API Development.

Labcorp delivers world-class diagnostic solutions and innovative medicines to patients faster and uses technology to improve the delivery of care.

MilliporeSigma specializes in pharmaceutical development/manufacturing and is a fully integrated organization to support CDMO and contract testing across traditional and novel modalities.

Catalent manufactures oral, sterile, and inhaled dose forms, and produces biologics for preclinical and clinical studies.

All of these companies have grown, thrived, and succeeded in bringing innovation to Wisconsin, with many being inspired to take down the same roots. We could not agree more that Wisconsin is a hub for Biotechnology and manufacturing both now and in the future.

We are excited for the opportunity to grow, manufacture, and succeed now and throughout the next generations in Wisconsin. This month, the exciting news broke that Wisconsin gained the prestigious EDA Tech Hub Designation for Personalized Medicine. This is a huge achievement for our state, as Wisconsin was selected as one of only 31 regions in the United States to receive the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) Regional Technology and Innovations Hub (Tech Hub) Phase 1 designation.
