Meet The Crew: Referendum & Communications Expert

Colleen Wischnewski

Alex Mielke has been a part of the JP Cullen family for six years; throughout her time here has worn many hats. She has taken on new responsibilities and has become such an asset to the JP Cullen Community. Some of her “hats” include:

Referendum and Communications Expert

Alex graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater with a degree in Public Relations and Graphic Design. Since, she has worked with 11 school districts on referenda in the past six years ranging from $2.75 million to $84 million, all of which have passed successfully. Alex uses this experience, along with her award-winning graphic design and communications skills, to visually market referendum and apply the techniques needed to share each District’s story with their voters.

President of the Young Leaders

JP Cullen’s Young Leaders Group is comprised of employees who have been with the company five years or less. To date, that is about 60 people within the group. Each quarter, they hold a day long meeting that includes training sessions, breakout groups, team building, getting to know each other, and most importantly fun. For the past two years, Alex has been the Group’s President and has organized and led each meeting. She’s been the perfect fit these past two challenging years because some of the meetings were forced, due to COVID protocols, to be held virtually.

As part of this opportunity, she was able to serve on the firm’s corporate strategic planning committee and be part of the strategic initiative that upholds our mission statement. Her role was to specifically focus on the retain aspect of the firm’s mission.

Corporate Branding Lead

Alex standardized the JP Cullen brand and put together a branding guide for everyone in the firm to access to ensure all materials follow our corporate branding. Using her brand guide, we now have succinct jobsite signage, proposal submissions, presentations, and brochures. In 2020, The Society of Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) awarded not one but two of Alex’s projects first place in their category. She created fun and interactive site signage for the Milwaukee Zoo Hippo Haven, and she put together a unique proposal submission for Advocate Aurora.

Mom & Wife

Quite possibly the hardest and most important hat Alex wears is that of Mom to one-and-a-half year-old, May and accident-prone rescue pup, Hank, and wife to her husband, Ben, who all keep her on her toes.  She couldn’t imagine life any differently – it would be pretty boring without her family!

I asked Alex why she chose to get into her profession and this is what she had to say:

“I got into communications, specifically graphic design, thanks to a teacher I had in high school opening my eyes to the endless opportunities it has. I honestly never thought that my love for art and creativity, something I think is so much fun, could actually be something I could make a living doing. I love coming to work and am very passionate about it!”
