In the Discovery Laboratory scientists work from the molecular to cellular levels to find innovative ways to improve patient care and outcomes for cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, and other special focus areas. The innovative transformation included offices, a vivarium, and unique laboratory environments for imaging, cell biology, virology, DNA protein sorting, experimental optics, microscopy/histology, and flow cytometry.

The lab includes a tissue processing and microscopy area, an enclosed area at Biosafety Level 2 allowing for genetic manipulation using viruses and other microorganisms to develop new immunotherapies. A refrigerated room allows for cold-temperature experiments and a separate  room houses deep freeze cryogenic equipment for storage of tissues, cells and supplies. Rounding out the lab are traditional human and animal cell and tissue preparation and culture spaces.

The Discovery Laboratory was organized around clean, functional circulation. The space-saving layout features shared work stations and communal core equipment. The spaces were kept as open as possible for flexibility and to encourage collaboration. Lighting, in addition to providing illumination, was used as an organizing element. This efficient design avoids duplication found in traditional pod-like laboratories and enhances communication among researchers.

One of the most distinctive elements of the lab is its barrel vaulted ceiling. Its dramatic design features a DNA pattern that echoes the lab’s purpose.
