We are nearing completion of the Children’s Museum of Rock County – a redevelop of a historic downtown Janesville property into a new, interactive museum space for children. The building was the former First National Bank Building, originally built by JP Cullen in 1912 – it holds a special place in our hearts. This project involved both renovation and new construction to support the museum’s future operations all while preserving the historic features of the building. Such as the full column pillars out front, something you rarely see even at the State Capitol, it is not one solid piece.

Construction began with significant demolition, removing portions of the structure while protecting areas that will remain. Roughly 75% of the building was removed and structurally rebuilt, incorporating steel framing, joists, and precast exterior wall systems. The interior will house exhibit spaces and a large play structure allowing kids to touch the tippy top of the building inside. Alongside structural work, the building had full system upgrades and interior buildouts tailored to a hands-on museum environment themed with Rock County in mind.

What makes this project unique is the amount of change happening within a confined downtown site. With demolition, new construction and restoration all occurring at once, the work requires detailed coordination between trades to keep everything moving safely and efficiently. As the project progresses, the new museum will blend the design of the original building with modern spaces designed to serve the community for years to come.
