Confidential Biotechnology Company -55 Degree C Freezer Addition
- Confidential Biotechnology Company
Location:
This project aimed to expand the freezer capacity at the confidential Biotechnology company’s facility in Southern Wisconsin, where probiotics for the dietary supplement market are produced. Our team took on the challenge of installing a -55°C freezer within the existing production space, significantly enhancing the facility’s storage capabilities.
Starting with a concept footprint of the freezer, our team completed the rest of the design as the EPC, demonstrating our expertise and adaptability. Aligning with the client’s sustainability initiatives, the freezer utilizes Solstice N40 (R448A), one of the most environmentally friendly refrigerants in the world. Using R448A to achieve such low temperatures (-55°C) presented some challenges that our team was able to overcome.
The scope of work was extensive. We demolished the existing slab inside the building to install the new foundations and underfloor heating system. We erected a steel platform above the new freezer before constructing the insulated box and setting the equipment. This state-of-the-art freezer replaced the need for super freezer trailers, providing storage for up to 120 totes.
During startup and commissioning, safety was a top priority. Our team implemented a comprehensive safety plan, including the use of insulated jackets, limiting time and exposure in the extreme cold, and employing a buddy system for added security. Given that the site was active during construction, we also adhered to strict clean room safety protocols.
This project not only enhanced the freezer capacity at the confidential Biotechnology company, but also showcased our team’s ability to deliver complex, high-stakes solutions in a challenging environment.
