Janesville Schools Secure Pathway

The School District of Janesville faced a significant challenge of ensuring the safety and security of its students and staff across its aging facilities. With an average building age of 64 years, the district needed to address outdated infrastructure specifically as it related to security concerns with entry to their buildings. But also included the replacement of old boilers and upgraded intercom and fire systems across multiple elementary schools.

As a long-standing partner of the School District of Janesville since 1920, we worked with the district on this $22.5 million referendum approved by 67% of district voters. The Secure Pathway project implemented state-of-the-art security measures featuring a triple-lock mechanism, which is now standard across all 18 academic buildings. Here are some key details about the new systems:

• Triple-Lock Mechanism: This includes three layers of security that must be engaged before access is granted, allowing school staff to thoroughly evaluate visitors before they can enter the building and not grant access into the rest of the building until evaluated.
• Visitor Evaluation: Upon arrival, visitors are required to interact with school staff through a secure entry point providing staff with the opportunity to assess the visitor’s intent and verify their identity, ensuring that only authorized individuals gain access.
• Enhanced Monitoring: The secure pathways are equipped with advanced monitoring systems that provides real-time surveillance and recording ensuring that any suspicious activity can be quickly identified and addressed.
• Custom Solutions: Each school building required a tailored approach to implement the secure pathways effectively guaranteeing that the unique architectural and operational needs of each facility were met.

By the start of the school year, all 18 academic buildings in the district had secure pathways installed, with the district office being the final building to receive this upgrade. This project not only addressed immediate security concerns but also ensured the long-term safety and well-being of students and staff.
