Construction often requires tight timelines, quick turnarounds, and unpredictable challenges. Once construction on a job site has begun, it’s crucial that we stay on top of our planning and scheduling. How do we go about his? Storyboarding. Everyday life creates a similar balancing act that can be difficult to plan, but luckily, we have a solution.
What is Storyboarding?
Storyboarding is a way of staying on schedule, looking ahead to upcoming tasks, holding yourself and others accountable, and predicting possible road bumps. This type of organization doesn’t only have to apply to a construction project, it can also apply to your upcoming projects, life goals, and much more. Below are 5 different ways storyboarding can help you in your everyday life.
Realistically Schedule Your Goals
Storyboarding will allow you to create milestones and realistic timelines for yourself. Before starting your schedule, it’s important to decide when you want to achieve this goal. Creating deadlines and tasks that you know are achievable will leave you more satisfied and on track to reach your goal.
Hold Yourself Accountable
A lot of times we create goals, but we never follow through. Part of storyboarding is creating a penalty box for the tasks that don’t get done that should’ve been complete. A penalty box itself isn’t too daunting, but when you add consequences you hold yourself to a higher standard. Sometimes your tasks will have an effect on others, so avoiding the penalty box not only leads you closer to your goals but it makes life easier for those around you.
Learn from Your Mistakes
Sometimes we can’t predict what life is going to throw at us but being proactive planners can help us avoid certain challenges in the future. Let’s say you use storyboarding to plan your next vacation. After booking your flight two weeks in advance, you realize that the further you book your flight from the vacation date the cheaper the trip becomes. For next storyboard, you now know to move that date to nine months before your trip instead.
Prioritize Efficiently
When planning things out far in advance, it allows us to see could possibly have an effect on our goal. Often times different steps require prior steps to be completed before you can advance. By laying out your schedule, it’ll make it clear which steps should be prioritized and when they need to be complete. Similarly, certain tasks on your storyboard will take precedence over others, so prioritizing your tasks will only lead to more success in the long run.
Remain Organized
When you feel like you have a hundred things going on, it can be easy to slip up and miss deadlines. Storyboarding is the ultimate way to make sure your priorities are met, and your tasks are complete. This type of organization can be done with sticky notes on your whiteboard or electronically, whatever keeps you on top of your plans best.
Storyboarding is a great tool that all our jobsites and other departments use throughout our company. Give it a try and see if you notice a difference in your everyday to-do’s.
