As the days grow shorter and the leaves begin to change, the dawn of a new school year brings with it the promise of fresh opportunities, learning, and growth. It’s an ideal time to reflect on the transformative experiences that the past few months have brought. For Tyler Geiger, a senior at UW-Platteville majoring in Construction Management with a minor in Business, this summer marked the culmination of his educational journey as he embarked on an internship with JP Cullen. Tyler’s journey with JP Cullen allowed him to see a project from its inception to its completion, providing valuable insights and growth opportunities along the way.

Tyler is a driven individual who has been immersed in the construction industry from a young age. His initial exposure came from working with a local mechanical company, JM Brennan. However, it was the allure of the General Contractor side of the construction industry that truly captivated him. This intrigue led him to pursue a degree in Construction Management at UW-Platteville, where his path eventually crossed with JP Cullen during a networking event.

Initial Impressions

Tyler’s first impressions of JP Cullen were overwhelmingly positive. He found the company to be filled with welcoming and supportive individuals, dispelling any initial apprehensions. His expectation of a professional environment aligned seamlessly with the reality of his experience. One notable highlight was the day dedicated to touring each of the offices and projects, where even the owners knew his name, leaving a lasting impression of JP Cullen’s commitment to its people.

Projects and Tasks

During his internship, Tyler had the privilege of working on several significant projects, including Baker Tilly Milwaukee Office Build-Out and University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee Mitchell Hall Restoration. Balancing responsibilities on two projects simultaneously was a new challenge. Tyler’s ability to adapt and maintain clear communication with different project teams showcased his organizational skills and commitment to excellence. Overcoming these challenges was an essential part of his learning experience.

Learning and Growth

Tyler’s internship provided him with a wealth of new skills and knowledge. He gained a comprehensive understanding of the construction process, including the various steps and intricacies of the construction life cycle. Most importantly, he learned the art of effective communication with diverse groups of people and the importance of problem-solving in a dynamic construction environment.

Collaboration within the construction teams at JP Cullen was a key component of Tyler’s internship. He felt fully integrated into the team, and this experience allowed him to work with professionals from various departments and roles, broadening his perspective and enhancing his teamwork skills.

Tyler was fortunate to have a mentor and supervisor during his internship in the form of Pete Beth. Additionally, he received valuable guidance from Project Managers like Sam Groth Andy Braatz. Their mentorship proved instrumental in his development, and one piece of advice from Andy on effective questioning left a lasting impact on Tyler.

Favorite Moments

Among the many memorable moments during his internship, watching the Blue Angels fly by at the Wells building last summer stands out. The unique experience of working in a skyscraper downtown and participating in a concrete pour highlighted the diverse and exciting nature of the construction industry.

Industry Insights

Tyler’s time at JP Cullen reshaped his perception of the construction industry. He gained a deep appreciation for the intelligence and skill that individuals in the construction field possess. He also recognized the pivotal role of a General Contractor in harnessing the knowledge of various professionals to achieve the best possible outcome for a project.

As Tyler’s internship concluded, he looked back with a sense of fulfillment and growth. The experience had not only provided him with invaluable skills but also transformed into a full-time position. Starting in January, Tyler will return to JP Cullen as a Site Engineer, a testament to the impact of his internship on his career trajectory.
