Going Above and Beyond: Inspiring the Next Generation at the Woodman’s Sports & Convention Center

Noah Schwengels

At JP Cullen, going above and beyond is not always about the buildings we construct or materials, it is about the people. Whether we are building large scale facilities, or making connections within the community, we believe in making long lasting impressions.

Recently, one of those moments came from a third-grade student and his school project.

From Classroom Curiosity to Jobsite Experience

Last year, Joseph, a local third grader picked JP Cullen for his third-grade report on a Janesville based company. What started out as a simple classroom assignment grew into something much more meaningful. When our Co-President, George Cullen, heard of Joseph’s project, he saw a chance to give him an experience that he would never forget. Shortly after, Joseph received a special delivery at his doorstep: A JP Cullen hard hat, safety vest, and a personal invitation to take a tour of the Woodman’s Sports & Convention Center (WSCC) project before his school year began.

Bringing Construction to Life

When the day of the tour arrived, George Cullen and Sean Kennedy (Director of Construction) provided Joseph and his family with an exclusive look behind the scenes tour of the progress of the project. George introduced him to the crew onsite, sharing to them why a young guest was on their jobsite that day. Sean gave insight on the construction process, and even some “top secret” information on the prefabricated panels. While Joseph might have been “playing it cool” throughout the tour, the impact of this experience was clear. As soon as he was back in the truck, the excitement set in, and he could not stop talking about what he had learned on the tour. From experiencing the field to hearing directly from the people constructing it, this experience brought his school project to life and created a core memory.

Building More Than Structures

The WSCC is more than just another project; it is a space for the Janesville Community. For families like Joseph’s, who were connected to the project through the “Together We Can” campaign with Friends of the Woodman’s Center, it made the experience of getting to tour the jobsite even more exciting. Moments like this remind us that our projects go far beyond just concrete and layout. It is also about sparking curiosity, inspiring the next generation, and making a lasting impact in the communities we serve.

The JP Cullen Difference

Here at JP Cullen, we take pride in delivering the best results to our clients, while also taking pride in how we got there. Whether it is taking time to welcome a curious student to a jobsite, sharing knowledge with the next generation, or providing a family with an unforgettable experience, we believe that these moments truly shape who we are, and our work.

Going above and beyond is not always planned, it comes together when we recognize opportunities to make a difference, and then act on them, leaving lasting impressions for the people we serve.
