DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Tillamook, one of the nation’s fastest-growing dairy brands, has started making and packaging ice cream at its Decatur plant.
The expansion marks a significant milestone for the company and a boost to the local economy.
Mike Bever, Tillamook’s Executive Vice President and Chief Supply Chain Officer, shared that the company chose Decatur for three key reasons: proximity to quality dairy supply, logistical advantages for distribution, and the welcoming local community.
“We want to be somewhere where we know the brand will be embraced and that we can really leverage our Tillamook culture,” Bever said.
WAND News and other Decatur media got a sneak peek of the facility on Wednesday. The new facility breathes new life into a former Prairie Farms plant, a building over a century old. While the structure had solid foundations, extensive renovations transformed it into a state-of-the-art ice cream production site.
“Standing in some of the area and remembering what they looked like before and then what they look like today is honestly shocking.”
The plant currently employs around 30 people. Tillamook aims to grow its team to 48 as production scales up to 15.5 million gallons of ice cream annually. “We’re hiring today,” Bever noted, emphasizing the company’s commitment to local job creation and long-term investment in the region.
The plant is starting with the production of five out of 30 planned ice cream flavors, gradually adding more each week through a careful commissioning process to ensure quality.
“We’re really running about 10% of where we want to be day-to-day, so we’ve got some work to do to ramp that up. But, we’re really excited about the progress we are making.”
