Meet Nick Herr, a dedicated and experienced member of the JP Cullen team. Nick began his journey with JP Cullen in May 2008 as a site engineer working at Epic. Over the years, he has advanced to the role of project manager in the Healthcare sectors. Beyond his project management responsibilities, Nick also serves as the President of the JP Cullen Project Manager Group, leading a team of professionals in delivering exceptional construction management services.
What do you like best about working at JP Cullen?
When I sit in on interviews, I often get this question asked of me by candidates. The answer is always the same: “the people”. We have the best people hands down, and I genuinely enjoy spending time with the people I work with both at and outside of work.
What is your proudest achievement?
From a personal standpoint, I would have to say marrying my wife and starting our family together. I’m still pretty astonished that I convinced her to marry me 🙂.
From a project standpoint, this is a really tough one. I’ve been fortunate to be involved in a number of really spectacular projects including Epic’s Deep Space, preservation of the State Capitol dome, and most recently the Proton Therapy Treatment Center at Eastpark.
Do you have a motto or personal mantra?
Depends on the day or situation, but generally I subscribe to a couple of maxims:
“Every job is a self-portrait of the person who did it. Autograph your work with excellence.”
“Find a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
If you could witness any event past, present or future, what would it be?
Tough question. I do enjoy my history, especially American history. I’d be tempted to go back and experience some of the more marquee moments from the Revolutionary War, but when compared to world history, American history is recent relatively speaking. So, I would probably say the construction of an ancient structure like the Egyptian pyramids, Roman Coliseum, Greek Parthenon, or something in that same vein.
What was your first job?
My very first job was working in an Italian bakery during high school. I started as a clerk and eventually got involved in baking all kinds of breads, pastries, and desserts and even decorating cakes.
What was your best vacation you have ever had?
Assuming I’m permitted to classify it as a “vacation”, I would have to say the deferred (due to COVID) honeymoon that my wife and I took to Hawaii. It had beautiful beaches, great hiking and exploring, wildlife, phenomenal food, and we even went skydiving!
What is your favorite past-time or hobby?
When I do have time to pass these days, I prefer to spend it with my family and friends. What exactly we’re doing is secondary at that point.
